Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Manchester United have made a bid for Robin van Persie but they are no nearer to signing him.

United are leading the race to sign the Dutchman and reports on Wednesday had claimed that the player was due to have a medical with a view to completing a move. Such reports appear to be wide of the mark but Ferguson has admitted he is keen to sign the striker if a deal can be agreed with the Gunners, which appears to be easier said than done. "We have made a bid and they've been trying to negotiate with other clubs," said Ferguson. "I don't have a gut feeling on it at the moment, I must admit. "We're not getting any breakthrough with Arsenal. It's difficult to say why they're operating this way. I don't know what their thoughts are because they're not giving anything away." Ferguson also played down rumours of a medical taking place and says there is nothing further to report at this stage. "I can't give you any more information," he added. "We just have to persevere. We are trying our best and hopefully it will come our way but there's no progress at this moment in time."
