Arsenal could miss out on top defender target Jan Vertonghen after arch rivals Tottenham opened talks with Ajax.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen to land the Belgium international central defender and earlier in the week reports had claimed that talks had begun over a potential move.
It was also thought that Vertonghen was keen to link up with fellow countryman Thomas Vermaelen at the Emirates Stadium when he leaves the Dutch club in the summer.
However it now looks as though Tottenham have nipped in and according to De Telegraaf in Holland, Vertonghen's agent Mustapha Nakhil has confirmed that Spurs have opened talks with a view to wrapping up a £7million deal.
Arsenal will not go down without a fight though and Wenger is sure to make his own approach in the hope he can convince the 25-year-old to move to the Emirates.
