Star facing fitness fight

Arsenal, 10:22, January 29, 2010 ,

Arsenal look set to be without Thomas Vermaelen against Manchester United even though his injury is not as serious as first feared.

The defender had to leave the field against Aston Villa on Wednesday night and it was initially feared he could miss the rest of the season with a broken leg.
However Gunners boss Arsene Wenger says scans have shown no fracture and the player should make a speedy recovery. The game against the Reds on Sunday looks to have come too soon for him though and Wenger expects him to miss out.
"There is no fracture in Thomas' leg but his injury still has to be assessed," Wenger told Arsenal TV Online. "There is still a good chance he will not play on Sunday."
Meanwhile, one player who is definitely out is Eduardo, who now faces a race to be fit to face Chelsea.
"Eduardo has a small, small, small hamstring problem," Wenger added. "He will be out for one week. He will not make Man United but he might make Chelsea."
