Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed he is in the market for at least one more defender before the transfer window closes.
The Gunners' defensive options have been decimated during the close season with Philippe Senderos, William Gallas, Mikael Silvestre and Sol Campbell all departing the Emirates since the end of last season.
The Arsenal boss has now admitted he needs to add at least another defender to his side if they are to compete at the top of the table this season.
"I wouldn't like to give you any names," Wenger told a press conference. "There are plenty of names that we consider and we analyse. We look at the financial possibilities and the technical potential. But it is impossible for me to come out with a name.
"We are still on the search because at the moment we only have three centre backs and we have seen last season you needed five. I believe we need at least four because we have some other players who can fill in this position but overall we are still on the search."
Bolton's Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka of Everton, Fulham centre-half Brede Hangeland, versatile Udinese defender Cristian Zapata and German international Per Mertesacker, of Werder Bremen, have all been mooted as potential targets for the Arsenal boss in recent weeks.
And Wenger is hoping to pounce for a defensive target before the transfer window closes at 1700 BST on September 1.
