Wenger ordered to deliver trophy

Arsenal, 15:32, October 11, 2009 ,

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has told Arsene Wenger he expects the Gunners manager to deliver some silverware this season.

The north London outfit have failed to win a trophy since their FA Cup success in 2005 and despite a number of near misses pressure is beginning to mount on Wenger to deliver a trophy.
Arsenal have made a good start to the season, finding themselves six points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea but with a game in hand and look capable of mounting a serious challenge for the league title.
Wenger has been given plenty of time to mould his squad and has produced an entertaining side, but Gazidis says now is the time for the Gunners boss to take the next step and bring success back to Arsenal.
"It's absolutely our ambition to win a trophy this year. I couldn't be more clear on that," Gazidis told the Daily Star Sunday.
"Second, third or fourth isn't good enough. We want to win something this season and we believe we have the squad to do that."
Gazidis went on to say that while he thought Wenger had done a great job in shaping the current side he felt that now is the time for them to deliver on their potential.
"We have created and developed a team playing fantastic football," he added. "It's wonderful to watch and very exciting at times.
"We've spoken about the group's potential. Now, and by now I mean this season, it's very important for us to focus strongly on winning something for the fans. They deserve it.
"We can talk about football as a business but, fundamentally, this club exists for the fans and they don't care about financial reports, they care about what happens on the pitch."
Betting experts might fancy using their free bet to back Wenger to deliver a trophy for the Gunners in one of the four competitions they are in this season.
