Double blow for Given
Aston Villa keeper Shay Given has revealed he wanted to extend his loan stay at Middlesbrough, but admits it was out of his hands.
The Republic of Ireland international will be aiming to keep his tenth clean sheet in what will be his final game in a Boro shirt against Leeds this weekend after Villa and Middlesbrough were unable to agree terms on an extension.
And the 37-year-old stopper couldn't hide his disappointment about the deal falling through.
"I would have liked to have stayed until the end of the season and try to help Boro climb the table but it was very much out of my hands and I have to go back to Villa," Given told the Evening Gazette.
"But I will look back fondly on my time at Boro. I was delighted that Mr Karanaka brought me in. I've had great times here and enjoyed every minute of it."
Given has also been left out of the Republic of Ireland squad to face Serbia in a friendly in Dublin on March 5.
Speculation had been rife that Given's successful loan spell with Middlesbrough would bring him back into Ireland boss Martin O'Neill's squad.
