O'Neill to launch striker raid
Aston Villa are hoping to pip Sunderland to the signing of Darren Bent by offering Tottenham £12m for the striker.
Bent has become one of the most in demand strikers of the summer so far and according to reports Villa boss Martin O'Neill is ready to steal a march on the Black Cats by making a move.
Tottenham are thought to be holding out for a figure in the region of £16million but Spurs boss Harry Redknapp needs to generate his own transfer funds and could be ready to accept £12m.
It seems as though Bent is surplus to requirements at Spurs and it could be a straight scrap between Villa and Sunderland to secure his services for next season.
Meanwhile, reports also claim that Villa are ready to offer Middlesbrough £12million for winger Stewart Downing, who is also attracting interest from Spurs.
