Aston Villa chief scout Glenn Roeder is understood to have turned down the chance to manage Panionios in Greece.

Roeder, the former West Ham and Newcastle manager, was apparently offered the job by the Greek Super League outfit who finished 12th in the table this season, four points above the relegation positions. But the 56-year-old, who lives in Essex, chose to remain in his position at Villa Park where he is overseeing the scouting operation. Panionios are now hoping to appoint former Spain and Barcelona striker Julio Salinas who has been working at the Athletic Bilbao academy. Roeder, who underwent an operation to remove a brain tumour when he was in charge at West Ham, was last in management at Norwich City more than two years ago.
