Villa boss puts Magpies midfielder on hold
Newcastle United midfielder Danny Guthrie could miss out on a summer move to Aston Villa if Alex McLeish takes the club down this term.
The former Liverpool youngster has struggled for regular first-team action at St James' Park this season and has been linked with a move to Villa in the summer.
Villa boss McLeish is looking to bring in fresh legs in the engine room and was keen to land the ex-Bolton starlet on a free transfer.
But Villa's recent poor form has seen them being dragged into the relegation fight at the bottom of the Premier League and there are serious question marks over the future of the manager.
All thoughts about potential new arrivals at Villa Park have now been put on hold until the end of the season.
But several other Premier League clubs could enter the race for Guthrie if Toon boss Alan Pardew decides he can leave, giving them a headstart on McLeish in negotiations.
