Costly striker deal for City

Birmingham City, 11:51, January 27, 2009

Birmingham are set to complete the signing for Honduran striker Carlos Costly from Polish club Belchatow.

The highly-rated 26-year-old has been looking for a move to England for the past 12 months, and has had trials with Leeds United and Plymouth, but a move has never materialised.

LA Galaxy, Kansas City Wizards and Mexican side Monterrey have all shown an interest in the striker but it's thought he would prefer to stay in Europe.

A number of teams are showing an interest in Costly but, with Birmingham interested, it looks like he is about to land his move to England.

Costly, who is set to initially join on loan with a view to a permanent deal, will have few issues gaining a work permit, as Honduras are ranked 40th in the world.

"I don't think it's any secret that we've made an inquiry for Costly and the next stage is to see if we can get it over the line," said Blues boss Alex McLeish in the Birmingham Mail.

Meanwhile, Birmingham are also expected to land defender Ibrahima Sonko in the transfer window as McLeish steps up his search for a defender.
