Rovers defender in demand

Blackburn Rovers, 13:51, December 31, 2008

AZ Alkmaar have confirmed an interest in signing Rovers defender Andre Ooijer if Sam Allardyce lets him go in January.

The Dutch centre-back is out of contract at the end of the season and has previously suggested he will return home when his Rovers deal expires.

But he has been offered the chance to join the runaway Eredivisie leaders in January if Rovers boss Allardyce feels he is surplus to his requirements.

'Big Sam' has picked Ooijer, who was slightly at fault for Manchester City's first goal on Sunday, but may let him go if he can sign sufficient defensive talent in the transfer window.

Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven have previously expressed an interest in Ooijer, 34, and now AZ have joined the chase.

"From a footballing perspective we would like to sign him for the club," AZ technical director Marcel Brands told Voetbal International.

"But the problem is that you don't sign Andre for the bench, so then you must put another player on the bench.

"Maybe that would result in disruption rather than calm."
