Striker steps up exit bid

Blackburn Rovers, 10:33, November 16, 2009 ,

Benni McCarthy will step up his attempts to leave Blackburn in January after being told his World Cup place is under threat.

McCarthy has spoken of his desire to leave Ewood Park when the window opens after becoming frustrated with his lack of first-team action under Sam Allardyce and now the South Africa coach has told him he needs to move on.
The striker impressed for his country at the weekend but has been told by Carlos Alberto Parreira that he needs to be playing on a more regular basis if he is to make the World Cup squad.
"I cannot speak on his behalf, but I heard him say that in the January transfer window, he will decided a new direction in his career maybe to go to a club where he can play because I don't think a player like him would be happy to be in the reserves and not playing and coming to the national team out-of-shape because of this," said Parreira.
"So, if he wants my advice I think he should look for a club where he can play."
Portsmouth could be one such club but McCarthy will want guarantees over a starting place as he will not want to swap the bench at Ewood for the one at Fratton Park.
