Owen Coyle rued his side's carelessness after Bolton surrendered the lead to lose 2-1 at Crawley in the Capital One Cup second round.
Arsenal loanee Benik Afobe had given the visitors an early advantage, but the Reds scored two goals in the last nine minutes to earn a memorable cup win.
The Trotters have now won only one of their opening four games this season, and Coyle lamented an opportunity missed.
He said: "We lost a game we should have won. You are never safe at 1-0 and we conceded two soft goals.
"We had enough good players to win but fair play to Crawley. Having said that we should have seen the game through.
"We were in a good position to win but we didn't manage it."
