Johnson says Webster is ready

Bristol City, 16:29, August 19, 2008

Gary Johnson has hailed Bristol City's loan capture of Rangers' Scotland international Andy Webster and says he is fully fit to play.

The Robins boss swooped to take the 26-year-old to Ashton Gate on a six-month deal following long-term injuries to Robins defenders Christian Ribeiro and Jamie McCombe.

On the arrival of Webster, who has been capped 22 times by Scotland and made football transfer history in 2006 when he used a FIFA loophole to cancel his contract at Hearts and join Wigan, Johnson told the club's official website: "We needed competition at centre-half and Andy is a rabbit out of the hat, that's for sure. To get somebody of Andy's experience, given the amount of games he played for Hearts and internationally for Scotland, is fantastic.

"He has seen our rising status and it is a move that works for all parties. He needs games and we feel he is fit enough."

On any fitness worries, he added: "Every signing you make has an element of risk, but that is what the medical is all about.

"Andy came through that fine and we made sure that he is strong in the areas he has had operations on.

"He had a hernia and a knee operation similar to the one Steve Brooker had and has worked hard to get himself back over the last 12 months

"He has been given the all-clear by various specialists and has a full pre-season under his belt."
