Maynard wins boss' backing
Bristol City, 18:13, December 18, 2008 ,
Gary Johnson is confident that his record signing Nicky Maynard will eventually prove his worth with the goals for Bristol City.
The Robins boss shelled out £2.25million to Crewe for the 22-year-old in the summer and he has struggled with just four goals in the Championship so far this term. However Johnson has seen enough of him on the training pitch to suggest he will find his top form.
"I've learned more about Nicky because things haven't been going so well for him and I'm convinced he will be a great asset to this club," said Johnson.
"People have to remember he's still very young and the Championship is a new level for him but all Nicky needs is a goal and if he stays positive and professional in his approach things will come right for him.
"I see things other people don't see and his attitude and mental state is where it should be. He's been absolutely flying in training and he looks a real talent. I know strikers are judged on goals and Nicky hasn't got as many as he would've liked but I've seen enough in his recent performances to know he will come good."
