Bristol Rovers boss Mark McGhee admitted the state of the club's pitch is "an embarrassment".
Gillingham chief Andy Hessenthaler blamed the playing surface for his side's failure to win after Dennis Oli's late header earned them a 2-2 draw. And McGhee said: "The pitch is a huge handicap, but we can't do anything about it. "We probably owe an apology to Gillingham asking them to come here and play on that pitch. It's an embarrassment to us. "We've got plans to improve it and we'll be digging it up in the summer so it should be better next season. Our groundsman was here until 1 o'clock in the morning working on it ahead of this game so there's nothing more we can do." Danny Kedwell missed a penalty for the Gills but they went ahead through Chris Whelpdale, only to trail with nine minutes left thanks to goals from Eliot Richards and Mustapha Carayol.
