Bayern snap up Sammer

Bayern Munich have appointed former Germany international Matthias Sammer as their sporting director to replace Christian Nerlinger.
The 44-year-old recently extended his deal as director of the German football federation until 2016 but the DFB have agreed to release him from his contract "with a heavy heart."
Bayern parted company with Nerlinger due to his and the board's "differing views on the concept for the future of the team" after the Bavarians finished second to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, while losing to Chelsea in the Champions League final.
Sammer won the European Championship as a player with Germany in 1996, and helped lead Dortmund to the 1997 Champions League title, while coaching them to the 2002 Bundesliga title.
