Race on for defender

Burnley, 09:47, November 30, 2009 ,

Burnley look to be facing stiff competition from club's in the Bundesliga for the services of Celtic defender Gary Caldwell.

The Clarets have long been expected to make a move for the Celtic ace when the transfer window opens in the New Year and they were reportedly confident about bringing him down to England and pairing him up alongside brother Steven at Turf Moor.
There is plenty of interest in Germany though with Bundesliga champs Wolfsburg set to swoop for the Scotland ace, Hannover '96 and Schalke 04 have also shown a keen interest.
Talks between the top-flight German outfits and Caldwell's agent, Paul Martin, took place before Celts' Euro clash with Hamburg earlier this month and his future remains unclear although he is said to be happy where he is at Celtic Park.
