Burnley boss Eddie Howe could head into the Capital One Cup first-round tie at Port Vale without a senior striker at his disposal.

Martin Paterson and Sam Vokes are on international duty with Northern Ireland and Wales respectively, while Danny Ings is facing an extended period on the sidelines after learning he requires cartilage surgery. Former Swindon frontman Charlie Austin has enjoyed a productive pre-season but returned to the south west on Saturday for his partner to give birth and was absent from training on Monday. If required, winger Junior Stanislas may be pressed into action as an emergency forward. Keith Treacy is sidelined with a groin injury, although he would have been part of Giovanni Trapattoni's Republic of Ireland squad if passed fit, while midfielder Marvin Bartley (ankle) is awaiting clearance from a specialist to resume training. Jason Shackell will captain the Clarets for the first time in a competitive match, while fellow summer signings Brian Stock and Joseph Mills are also in line for debuts.
