Wilcox's promotion mission

Burnley, 19:36, June 14, 2010 ,

Assistant boss Russ Wilcox says he is already over the disappointment of going down and is now turning his attention to next season.

Wilcox believes Burnley will have one of the best squads in the Championship and he is backing the players to prove it with their performances on the pitch.
The former defender would love nothing better than to enjoy a successful campaign after a tricky first six months for himself and manager Brian Laws at Turf Moor, which ultimately ended in relegation for the Clarets.
Some fans were even calling for Laws' sacking once their fate was sealed, but Wilcox is convinced the duo were on a hiding to-nothing after replacing firm favourite Owen Coyle last January following his defection to Bolton.
The ex-Sheffield Wednesday coach told the club's official website: "It was tough when we came in. I think people forget the club had not won for nine games.
"I'm not saying the writing was on the wall, but the cracks were appearing.
"It was a similar tale to Hull the previous year.
"You are on a high from the previous season and winning at Wembley is a massive adrenalin boost for everybody associated with the club and the town.
"Then suddenly the newness wears off a little bit.
"Hull had the same problem the previous year but just managed to stay up on the last day. We didn't manage that but I think it was a tough ask coming in.
"Things have settled down now though and we can look forward to playing on a level playing field, albeit one hopefully where we will be one of the stronger clubs and squads in the Championship.
"That gives you a lot of confidence and a lot of belief in what we are trying to do, which is get back at the first attempt."
