Coyle a candidate after Strachan quits
Celtic, 16:45, May 25, 2009 ,
Gordon Strachan has resigned just one day after Celtic surrendered the Scottish Premier League title to Rangers.
The 52-year-old Scot won three SPL titles in a four-year tenure, but his side let a seven-point lead at the turn of the year slip and were unable to overhaul Rangers on the last day of the season.
The former Coventry and Southampton boss also won two League Cups and enjoyed a Scottish Cup triumph in 2007, but to many his greatest achievement was qualifying Celtic for the knock out phase of the Champions League.
Strachan struggled to completely win over the club's supporters, many of whom wanted him sacked early into his tenure when Celtic lost to Artmedia Bratislava in the Champions League qualifying round.
This season brought criticism of Celtic's playing style and Strachan's team selections, before a dressing-room bust-up with Aiden McGeady, which led to a two-week suspension and club fine for the Republic of Ireland star.
Strachan's decision to omit McGeady from the starting line-up in the recent 1-0 loss to Rangers at Ibrox also attracted criticism.
Burnley's Owen Coyle has been installed as the leading candidate to replace Strachan. Tony Mowbray, Roberto Martinez, Alan Curbishley, Mick McCarthy and Mark McGhee are also in the frame.
