Murphy spot-on in Celtic win
Celtic, 15:16, August 29, 2010 ,
Daryl Murphy's first Celtic goal gave his side a 1-0 win against Motherwell to maintain the club's 100 per cent start to the season.
Murphy scored from the penalty spot after Steve Saunders was sent off for a foul on Shaun Maloney after 73 minutes.
Boss Neil Lennon wielded the axe after the club's 4-0 defeat in the Europa League against Utrecht, making five changes including giving debuts to Fraser Forster and Emilio Izaguirre. Maloney and Murphy were brought in, while Glenn Loovens was also given a start.
The home side were the first to threaten, and John Sutton ought to have done better than head wide from five yards after being found by a low Tom Hateley free-kick.
Celtic replied swiftly, and James Forrest's cross saw Maloney fire in a shot that keeper Darren Randolph was just able to keep out.
Then a Maloney free-kick skimmed the top of the bar as the visitors sought to take a grip on the game.
Randolph was again in action when a Murphy shot deflected high and apparently over the keeper, who managed to fingertip the ball over the bar.
Maloney carved out a chance for himself with a weaving run into the box, beating three defenders but then slicing into the side-netting from 10 yards as the first-half ended goalless.
The introduction of Paddy McCourt for Georgios Samaras turned the game as Celtic made the breakthrough after 73 minutes.
Maloney raced clear and went down under the challenge of Saunders, with referee Dougie McDonald having no hesitation in either awarding the spot kick or sending the home player off. Murphy sent Randolph the wrong way from the resulting penalty to book the points for Celtic.
