Southampton could look to sign Newcastle keeper and Celtic target Fraser Forster after having a £6million bid for Jack Butland snubbed.

Saints boss Nigel Adkins has been heavily linked with a summer swoop for Birmingham's 19-year-old Butland after being impressed with his performances while on loan at League Two side Cheltenham last season. However, Butland's call up to England coach Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 squad after John Ruddy pulled out with a broken finger has done Adkins no favours in his bid to bring in an eventual successor for 35-year-old Kelvin Davis. New Birmingham boss Lee Clark insisted it would now take 'crazy money' for anyone to take Butland and followed it up by snubbing the Saints' £6million bid. Therefore, Adkins is set to cast his net elsewhere and 24-year-old Forster could be an ideal alternative following his decision to snub a permanent move to Celtic, where he has spent the past two seasons on loan. Newcastle's former Saints boss Alan Pardew revealed Forster has no future at the Sports Direct Arena due to the presence of Tim Krul, Steve Harper and Rob Elliot. And, he could be available for around £2million which would be well within the Saints' budget.
