Clough closing in on Jacobs

Derby boss Nigel Clough hopes to wrap up a deal for Northampton winger Michael Jacobs and expects him to play a big part next term.

Jacobs has been a long-term Rams target and has been the subject of discussions between the two clubs. The 20-year-old is out of contract this summer but Derby would need to pay compensation because of his age. Clough remains confident of landing Northampton's player of the year, despite interest from other clubs. "He's a player we like and he fits into the profile of a young player with potential who could play a part next season. He certainly has the ability to improve and go on to play at a higher level," said the Rams boss. "There are other clubs interested but I think what we can offer him here seems just about right for this stage of his career."
