Chelsea are reported to have failed with a £16million to sign Bayer Leverkusen forward Andre Schurrle.
Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo is keen to strengthen his attack this summer and turned to the highly-rated German after failing with an opening bid for Wigan's Victor Moses.
However reports in Germany claim that Leverkusen have rejected the offer and Di Matteo now has to decide whether to go back with a new improved bid for Schurrle or turn attentions back to Moses.
At the age of just 21, Schurrle is one of Germany's most exciting young talents and has already picked up 16 caps for the national side, so it is easy to see why Di Matteo wants him on board.
However Leverkusen chief executive Wolfgang Holzhauser has been quoted as saying a deal will not happen as they have decided not to sell the player.
"We were presented with a very concrete offer from Chelsea for Andre of beyond the 20 million euro mark," he told the German news agency SID. "The sum was pushed back and forth between the two clubs. We ultimately chose Andre. Andre is very valuable for us. He has also made it clear he would like to stay with us."
However it remains to be seen if Leverkusen would be able to turn down a bigger offer if Di Matteo decides to go back in for the player.
