Roberto Di Matteo has not given up on clinching fourth spot but admits poor results throughout the season have cost them.
Chelsea crashed to a 2-0 home defeat against Newcastle on Wednesday night as Papiss Cisse grabbed a brace and a place in the top four and guaranteed Champions League football now looks beyond them.
The Blues will have to win their remaining games and hope that results elsewhere go for them but Tottenham's 4-1 win at Bolton last night certainly didn't help matters.
"It's going to be difficult now for us to reach fourth spot," the Italian admitted after the game. "We'll keep pushing though until it's impossible. We won't give up."
Di Matteo has done well since taking over from Andre Villas-Boas but says they have paid the price for some poor results throughout the season, particularly against the top four.
"We've lost many points during this season," he added. "Looking back over the whole season, that's why we're in the position we are."
