French fear for Drogba switch
Marseille have confirmed their interest in Didier Drogba but say they may not be able to match the striker's wage demands.
Drogba has one-year remaining on his contract and there were doubts over whether he would be staying at Stamford Bridge next season even before the arrival of Andre Villas-Boas.
Chelsea's new boss could be willing to let the Ivory Coast star move on and although Marseille would love to re-sign him, the total package involved in any transfer may be too much for them.
The fee they could match but Drogba's wages could be a problem.
"The question is whether in terms of salary, I do not mean the transfer, Marseille have the means for four years to pay Didier Drogba," Marseille president Vincent Labrune told La Provence.
"I answer 'yes'. But we cannot afford 11 Didier Drogbas. So is it possible? Yes, but in the case of departures."
Drogba has said in the past that a return to the Stade Velodrome could be an option but he would have to drop his demands if a move is to go through.
