New hitch in Sidwell departure
Steve Sidwell's proposed £5.5m switch to Aston Villa from Chelsea is reportedly being held up by the player's £2million pay-off demand.
It was suggested on Monday that the deal was on hold simply because the 25-year-old former Reading man is still away on holiday and the move would be completed on his return. However it now seems Sidwell wants a handsome golden handshake from Chelsea because they are willing to sell him and he still has three years left on a £50,000-a-week contract at Stamford Bridge.
Villa are offering the former Arsenal youngster a £35,000-a-week contract at Villa Park and it appears he wants the £2million pay-off as compensation for taking a drop in wages to leave the Londoners given that they will be making a huge profit on him.
Sidwell joined the Blues on a Bosman free transfer from the Royals 12 months ago and has barely played for the club.
