Anderson set to test his fitness
Cricket, 10:01, December 12, 2009 ,
Coach Andy Flower is hopeful that Jimmy Anderson will prove his fitness for England's first Test against South Africa on Wednesday.
The fast bowler has recently endured another round of injections on a mystery problem to his right knee, which has kept him sidelined since his five-wicket haul in a one-day international against the Proteas in Port Elizabeth last month.
Anderson is due to bowl against a South Africa Invitational XI at Buffalo Park on Saturday in an attempt to show he is ready to spearhead England's bowling attack at Centurion this coming week.
Flower has been pleased with Anderson's progress but knows the real test will come when he gets out on the field and bowls some overs.
"I don't think we need to see any huge volume of overs," said Flower. "We'd like a couple of reasonable spells and then see the reaction of his knee to that workload.
"He's upped his workload a bit over the last two days, and then it will be upped again today.
"It is looking promising. I've just checked on how he is, and he's feeling very good about his knee."
England performed well with the bat on day one of two on Friday, as a century from captain Andrew Strauss and three other half-centuries, including one from Kevin Pietersen, saw them close on 317-5.
