Former Australia captain Ian Chappell hopes young England batsman Jonny Bairstow can bounce back from a tough Test match initiation.
Bairstow received a call-up to the England Test side following encouraging showings in one-day international cricket and an impressive start to the county season with Yorkshire. However, he struggled for runs against West Indies and his technique against the short ball was called into question following an unconvincing performance in the face of hostile bowling from Kemar Roach. Chappell placed Bairstow in the same category as India's Suresh Raina and insisted the pair must be given time to adapt to the rigours of Test cricket. "Both Bairstow and Raina are talented players with the skill to make big scores in the Test arena. The game needs young players like them to succeed, because they are extremely entertaining cricketers," the Australian wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo website. "Hopefully Bairstow and Raina will get their games sorted out and go on to have successful Test careers."
