Cowan in line for debut
Ed Cowan is set for his Australian debut against India on Boxing Day, but batsmen Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey are also in the squad.
Opener Cowan has been given the nod for the traditional MCG Test on Boxing Day, but under-performing Ponting and Hussey retain their places in the squad as well.
Shaun Marsh and Ben Hilfenhaus are also called into the 13-man squad for the Melbourne Test, at the expense of New South Wales pair Phil Hughes and Usman Khawaja.
However, all-rounder Shane Watson is still injured, with his hamstring problem, and fast bowler Ryan Harris has been left out after only just returning to action in Tuesday's Big Bash League game at the Gabba.
"Ed Cowan has been in excellent form in recent weeks. His inclusion is in recognition of his consistently good performances and we anticipate that he can provide steadiness at the top of the order," said CA chairman of selectors John Inverarity, who also insisted Hughes and Khawaja are still very much part of the future plans.
"We see both Phillip Hughes and Usman Khawaja as developing players with bright futures and remaining as players of significance," he added.
"They are determined young men and I know that they will work hard to produce compelling performances and push strongly for further consideration."
