Dhoni piles on the agony
Cricket, 13:33, December 4, 2009 ,
Virender Sehwag failed to reach a third triple century but India declared on 726-9 on day three of the final Test against Sri Lanka.
The diminutive right-hander began the day on 284, needing just 16 runs to join Sir Donald Bradman and Brian Lara as the third player in the history of the game to score three triple centuries in the five-day game.
But he fell tamely for 293, chipping a return catch back to Muttiah Muralitharan with the score on 458.
However if the Sri Lankans thought that Sehwag's dismissal would signal the start of a collapse they were very much mistaken as the hosts continued to pile on the runs in Mumbai.
Rahul Dravid made 74, Sachin Tendulkar 53 and VVS Laxman chipped in with 62.
But it was the skipper, MS Dhoni, who played the dominant innings on day three with an unbeaten 100 from 154 deliveries, with three fours and six sixes.
Muralitharan's 4-195 was the best return for the visitors while Rangana Herath returned the unfortunate figures of 3-240.
Sri Lanka reached 11 without loss in their second innings, still 322 runs behind and, with two days remaining, the Indians are strong favourites to wrap up the series in the next couple of days.
