Elementary for Watson Down Under
Cricket, 10:39, December 5, 2009 ,
Shane Watson hit an unbeaten 96 as Australia responded to the West Indies total of 451 in confident fashion in the second Test.
The all-rounder hit 16 fours in his 146-ball knock, while fellow opener Simon Katich will resume on 71 on day three with the hosts on 174 without loss in reply to the West Indies 451 all out.
The tourists began the day on 336-6 but lost Darren Sammy first ball, lbw to Peter Siddle, before Sulieman Benn went for a painstaking 17.
Brendan Nash kept going about his business at the other end and, following the dismissal of Kemar Roach for just two, found a suitable ally in last man Ravi Rampaul.
In just his second Test, the tail-ender hit an unbeaten 40 from 66 deliveries, with six fours and two sixes.
Nash eventually fell for 92 after nearly four hours at the crease and the visitors ended with a decent first-innings score.
However their effort was put into perspective by the hosts with both openers batting through to the end of the day and setting up a position were Australia should go past the men from the Caribbean on day three.
