Farhat defiant as Kiwis dominate
Cricket, 10:29, December 11, 2009 ,
Imran Farhat carried his bat for 117 but New Zealand dismissed Pakistan for just 223 on day one of the third and final Test in Napier.
Following their series-levelling 141-run victory in Wellington, the tourists were looking to secure a decent first-innings total after electing to bat first but Iain O'Brien ripped out four of the first six batsmen for next to nothing to leave Pakistan reeling at 51-5, with Tim Southee removing opener Salman Butt (9) to start the rout.
Mohammad Yousuf, Umar Akmal and Misbah-ul-Haq all failed to trouble the scorers while Farhat went about his business at the other end, hitting 14 fours and a six in his 169-ball knock.
Kamran Akmal (22), Mohammad Aamer (23) and Umar Gul (24) gave good support down the order as Farhat reached his third Test century before Daryl Tuffey had the last four batsmen caught behind by Kiwi skipper Brendon McCullum to end the innings.
In the 19 overs that remained, the hosts reached 47 without loss as Tim McIntosh ended day one on 31 not out and BJ Watling reached 13 at the close.
