Matthew Hoggard has been ruled out of action for at least a month after undergoing surgery on the hand injury he suffered in training.
The 35-year-old picked up the injury last week during practice and looks set to miss Leicestershire's Division Two clashes with Derbyshire, Hampshire, Yorkshire and Northamptonshire, plus a couple of one-day encounters.
The former England seamer moved to Grace Road in 2010 and was immediately given the captaincy and guided the side to glory in the 2011 Twenty20 competition.
But they finished bottom of the Championship and will be looking for an improved display in Division two this term.
The East Midlanders will have to do without their skipper for a while however, as coach Phil Whitticase told thecricketer.com.
"How quickly he plays will be dependent upon how quickly he heals," he said. "But it's his non-bowling hand - which is a positive."
Hoggard suffered a similar injury last summer, missing two months after hurting his right hand, but he should be back in action by mid-May.
