Katich and Watson boost Aussies
Cricket, 10:20, December 26, 2009 ,
Shane Watson and Simon Katich missed out on centuries as they helped Australia to 305-3 in the first Test against Pakistan at the MCG.
Watson was run out on 93 in bizarre cirumstances on day one in Melbourne, while Katich went shortly afterwards for 98, caught at backward point by Salman Butt off the bowling of Mohammad Asif. However the Australian openers had guided the hosts to 117-0 at tea in the Boxing Day Test.
Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who had passed a fitness test on an elbow injury, made 57 with seven boundaries in 60 balls before he was caught by Misbah-ul-Haq at second slip.
Michael Hussey (38) and night-watchman Nathan Hauritz (5) were the men still standing at stumps.
