Fast bowlers Mitchell Johnson and Pat Cummins have been recalled to the Australia one-day squad for their upcoming tour of England.
The talented pacemen will take their place in a 15-man squad to face Alastair Cook's side in five ODIs between June 29 and July 10. The Baggy Greens will also face Ireland in a one-off, 50-over contest in Belfast on June 23 and it will be the first time in several months that their first-choice pace attack is available. Johnson's Test career has faltered in recent times but he remains a potent threat with bat and ball in the shortened version of the game and took 39 wickets from 22 one-day internationals in 2011 before being hit on the foot in a Test against South Africa back in November. The left-armer has not played competitively since and has been undergoing physiotherapy back in Western Australia, with the tour to England always the target for his comeback. National selector John Inverarity was delighted to be able to include Johnson in the squad and hinted that they had made an extra place in the touring party to accommodate the mercurial star. "The National Selection Panel is looking forward to Mitchell being reinvigorated after being out of the game for six months," he said. "We could have taken a squad of 14 and that in some senses would have been a better balanced squad, but we went with 15." Cummins burst on to the scene as an 18-year-old last November when he claimed 6-79 and hit the winning runs against South Africa on his Test debut. But the New South Wales youngster also went down with injury and was ruled out for a significant period with a bone stress injury in his foot. However, the Sydney-born speedster is now back fit and raring to go and Inverarity felt is was necessary to pack the squad with fast bowlers due to their recent injury records. "The reason we went with 15 was Pat Cummins is coming back so there is a little bit of a question mark there," he added. "With James Pattinson there also just a bit of a question mark and with Mitch one of the thoughts was that he's very much in our sights for the Twenty20 World Cup, so we're going to develop him as well as we can for that." Pattinson took his chance in the absence of Johnson and Cummins and, along with Ben Hilfenhaus and Brett Lee, the trio represent the Aussies' best options in the fast bowling department. Australia squad: M Clarke (captain), S Watson, G Bailey, P Cummins, X Doherty, B Hilfenhaus, M Hussey, D Hussey, M Johnson, B Lee, C McKay, J Pattinson, S Smith, M Wade, D Warner.
