Pakistan openers hit back
Cricket, 19:26, December 13, 2009 ,
Pakistan's openers hit back with an unbroken stand of 128 after Daryl Tuffey's unbeaten 80 gave New Zealand a huge first-innings lead.
The Black Caps began the day on 346-6, with skipper Daniel Vettori unbeaten on 100 and the all-rounder added another 34 runs before he was caught by Umar Akmal off the bowling of Mohammad Asif.
Tim Southee lasted just three balls for a duck but Iain O'Brien (19) and Tuffey, who both took four wickets in Pakistan's first innings, then put on a ninth-wicket stand of 62 before Danish Kaneria removed the final two batsmen to finish with figures of 7-158.
Tuffey's innings lasted 123 deliveries and included eight fours and two sixes and was his first half-century in the five-day game.
New Zealand's lead was 248 but the Pakistan openers made a mockery of their first-innings total of just 223, as Imran Farhat, who carried his bat for 117 first time around, ended day three unbeaten on 55, while Salman Butt will begin day four on 66 as the tourists finished on 128-0.
The hosts are still in a strong position but with the lead reduced to just 120 runs and with all second-innings wickets still intact, the Asian giants will fancy their chances of escaping with at least a draw in Napier.
