England batsman Kevin Pietersen has been fined an undisclosed sum after making comments on Twitter deemed inappropriate by the ECB.
Pietersen posted remarks relating to former England international and current television commentator Nick Knight.
The South African-born player, who has played a key role for his adopted nation since making his Test debut in 2005, published the comments on his personal Twitter account on May 18 and was summoned by the ECB to attend a disciplinary hearing later that week.
"The hearing considered recent comments made by Pietersen on Twitter to be prejudicial to the interests of the ECB and a breach of the England player conditions of employment in relation to clauses regarding public statements," read a statement released following the culmination of the governing body's deliberations.
"Pietersen has been fined an undisclosed sum, part of which has been suspended for 12 months, in accordance with the terms and conditions of his England central contract."
Despite being handed the punishment, the offending Tweet posted by Pietersen remains visible on the player's Twitter account.
