Strauss - We dug deep

Andrew Strauss has praised the West Indies performance on the final day at Lord's, saying his England side were made to "dig deep".
The hosts began Monday needing to hit 191 following a superb day of defensive batting from West Indies with both Shiv Chanderpaul and Marlon Samuels standing firm for the majority of Sunday. However, the early losses of Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen left them struggling on 57-4 before Ian Bell and Alastair Cook combined for a fifth wicket stand of 132. Cook was eventually dismissed with two runs still required but fittingly it was Bell who sealed the victory with a stylish boundary through mid-wicket. Despite the convincing nature of the result, Strauss admits that his did panic and has praised the Windies for their performance throughout the final day. "We had to dig deep but it makes it even more satisfying when you get over the line," said Strauss. "We certainly didn't have it all our own way. West Indies made it difficult for us but we are delighted to be 1-0 up."
