Yousuf gives Pakistan hope
Cricket, 11:39, December 14, 2009 ,
Pakistan have given themselves a chance of saving the third Test with New Zealand after a solid batting performance on day four.
Trailing the Kiwis by 248 after the first innings, the visitors began day four on 128 without loss but were soon up against it after losing Imran Farhat for 61 and Salman Butt for 66 - both caught and bowled by occasional off-break bowler Martin Guptill.
At 146-2, the Black Caps would have fancied their chances of running through the Pakistan middle order once again to wrap up victory and take the series 2-1, but Mohammad Yousuf and Faisal Iqbal put on a watchful stand of 128 to dig their side out of a huge hole.
Iqbal fell for 67 while Yousuf was out just 11 runs short of his century - hitting eight fours and one six in his 212-ball 89.
Umar Akmal kept up the good work with a breezy unbeaten 48 and he will resume day five with Misbah-ul-Haq, who dug in for 22 deliveries for his four runs towards the close of play in Napier - ending the day on 347-4.
Guptill has taken 2-28 to date, while Chris Martin, with 1-55 and Iain O'Brien, who has taken 1-85 from 28 overs, are the other two wicket-takers.
