Clough closer to Rams return

Derby County, 12:06, January 6, 2009 ,

Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough looks set to follow in his fathers footsteps, as he is favourite to take over as the next Derby boss.

Clough, who has been at Burton for ten years, is believed to be keen on taking over at Pride Park following the resignation of Paul Jewell last week.
Rams Chairman Adam Pearson has spoken to his counterpart at Burton, Ben Robinson, and confirmed that Clough is one of a number of names being considered with some observers and its believed that if all goes to plan, Clough could unveiled in time for this weekend's trip to Cardiff.
Pearson told the Derby Telegraph: "Nigel Clough is definitely one we are looking at but at this stage, Nigel, Chris Hutchings and one or two others are still very much in the frame.
"I would think that by the end of the week, we will be in a position to name a permanent manager."
Clough, who's father Brian lead the Rams to great heights in the 70s, is seen by many as the ideal applicant for the job and he would be a popular appointment with the fans.
The ex Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and England midfielder has rejected numerous managerial offers in the past, but this one appears too good to turn down.
In the meantime, he will still be in charge of Albion for tonight's clash with Torquay where he will be looking to create a Conference record of twelve successive wins and possibly bow out on a high.
