Derby manager Nigel Clough saw plenty of positives to build on as the Rams held Barclays Premier League club Sunderland to a 1-1 draw in their latest friendly.
James McClean's strike put the Black Cats ahead in the second half before substitute Nathan Tyson headed home Michael Hoganson's cross in the 89th minute.
Following the game at Pride Park, Clough said: "I thought the players competed well against a Premier League side and we knocked the ball around well at times, especially in the first half.
"The step up in quality was there for all to see, especially when they broke at us but you expect that from a top-flight side.
"Premier League opposition always prove to be good test for us in pre-season. We won't come up against players of that quality in the Championship so it's always a good test in many different ways for the squad.
"It was nice not to lose as well; it might only be a pre-season game but it's a good feeling not to have lost our first game at home since the end of last season."
