Clough takes over at County
Derby County, 17:35, January 6, 2009 ,
Chairman Adam Pearson says Nigel Clough 'is ready for the bigger stage' after confirming that he will become the new manager of Derby.
Pearson admitted that the 42-year-old has agreed to leave Blue Square Premier League leaders Burton Albion, where he has been in charge for over 10 years, to take over at Pride Park from Paul Jewell, who quit last week.
The former Nottingham Forest and Liverpool striker will get the chance to follow in the footsteps of his father Brian, who managed the East Midlands side between 1967 and 1973, and Pearson feels he is the right man for the job.
On Clough's appointment, Pearson told a press conference on Tuesday afternoon: "He understands the football club, and is a disciple of the way supporters like to see the game played. That is important.
"He's certainly got the right man-management style for this squad at this time, and I think there's more to come from them."
He added: "I think he's got the experience up and down the league and he has played top level football. People say are you worried about him coming from the Blue Square Premier, but I think he can command respect from any player in the land.
"So I think he's done his apprenticeship and is ready for the bigger stage.
"He'll take us in a different direction and I think he's exactly the right man at the right time."
