Newcastle set to move for Vertonghen
Newcastle are set to challenge Arsenal and Tottenham for Jan Vertonghen after Alan Pardew travelled to watch the Ajax star.
The Magpies boss was in attendance at the Amsterdam ArenA on Sunday night as Ajax beat De Graafschap 3-1 with reports suggesting Pardew is lining up a bid for the Belgian defender.
Arsenal and Spurs are also monitoring Vertonghen with the 24-year-old previously expressing an interest in joining compatriot Thomas Vermaelen at Emirates Stadium.
Vertonghen has one year left on his contract and Ajax are believed to be ready to cash in on one of their prized assets.
Pardew has reinvested the money recouped from the sale of striker Andy Carroll wisely over the past 12 months, with the likes of Yohan Cabaye and Papiss Cisse proving to be astute signings. He will be hoping Vertonghen follows suit.
