Toffees chief eyes seven deals

Everton, 13:08, August 24, 2008 ,

David Moyes has confirmed that he wants to take seven new signings to Everton before the transfer deadline despite a 2-1 win West Brom.

The Toffees chief has endured a difficult summer in the market with several players snubbing a move to Goodison Park or clubs refusing to sell them their star men. However, Moyes is refusing to be defeated in his efforts to bolster the injury-hit squad and feels up to seven players are required to get them up to strength.
"I need to buy top players to challenge the top teams - and that costs big money," Moyes said in the News of the World.
"I'm going to try to do something but I can't say for sure it is going to happen. This is the first summer where I feel I have not made any progression.
"I don't need to buy mid-Premier League players - I need top players.
"We've got these injuries and I want to sign six or seven players before next week."
Meanwhile, Moyes praised his current defensive players for the part they played in the win against the Baggies at the Hawthorns on Saturday as Leon Osman and Yakubu scored the goals to seal the points.
"The boys at the back were the difference today," he told Sky Sports. "It was an excellent performance by them after a difficult time last week.
"West Brom were much better than us in the first half and it was maybe a little unfortunate they didn't get a goal.
"I thought they had quite a lot around our box but I think we defended well enough to keep them out."
