Paul Tisdale could not find fault with his players' effort after a penalty shootout loss to Aldershot in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
Tisdale was left to rue their inability to turn possession into chances and goals as the game, which ended 0-0 after extra-time, was decided by spot-kicks.
Grecians youngster Jordan Moore-Taylor and the experienced Steve Tully both saw their 12-yard efforts saved as Tisdale's men crashed out.
The Exeter boss said: "I'm disappointed with the result, but I thought we gave a very good performance and we did enough to win the game.
"There were plenty of positives to take, I thought we played really well and defended extremely well.
"We did well at the back and came close a number of times, but maybe we didn't have quite enough chances."
