Mosely afraid of Bahrain backlash
Formula 1, 15:26, June 5, 2011
Max Mosely has slammed the decision to rearrange the Bahrain Grand Prix, saying it will damage the reputation of Formula 1.
Mosely, formerly the president of governing body the FIA, has accused officials of playing into Bahrain's hands as the country tries to improve its image after recent political toubles.
The race was originally meant to take place in February but was postponed due to a political uprising in the country in protest against its human rights policy.
Many drivers have expressed the view the race should have been cancelled altogether until the situation in the country had been fully resolved and Mosely believes staging the race could cause irreparable damage to the sport's reputation.
"By running the race they hope to show the world the troubles were just a small, temporary difficulty and everything is now back to normal" said the 71-year-old.
"By agreeing to race there, Formula One becomes complicit in what has happened. It becomes one of the Bahrain government's instruments of repression. The decision to hold the race is a mistake which will not be forgotten and, if not reversed, will eventually cost Formula One dear."
