United poised to raid the Cottage

Fulham, Latest news update:

Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly planning a swoop for Fulham's Brede Hangeland to help ease Manchester United's defensive injury woes.

The Red Devils' chief has been hampered by a selection nightmare in his backline so far this season with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and skipper Nemanja Vidic all sidelined because of respective knee, broken metatarsal and knee surgery problems.
It has resulted in Michael Carrick being deployed in a central defensive role in some matches, while Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand are the only fit players available for the position at the moment.
Youngster Scott Wootton, who made his senior team debut in the recent Capital One Cup win over Newcastle United, is coming through for the long-term future, but it seems Ferguson wants to fill the void in his defence with a player who boasts a wealth of Premier League experience.
Therefore, it seems Hangeland could be approached in the January transfer window to help United's bid for domestic and Champions League success this season.
The Norway international, who is in the final year of his current contract at Craven Cottage and appears to be in no rush to sign an extension, could be lured to Old Trafford by the opportunity to secure some silverware and play in top European competition.
If he has failed to pen a new contract by the New Year then Cottagers boss Martin Jol could also be persuaded to offload him in order to bring in some funds to find a replacement as opposed to losing him on a Bosman free transfer next summer.
