Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee produced a gutsy final round display to win the ISPS Handa Wales Open on Sunday.
The 42-year-old led going into the final round at Celtic Manor but, like the most of the field, struggled in the difficult conditions, going out in three-over 39. However, he appeared to find his range around the turn, shooting three straight birdies from the 10th and could even afford a bogey on the final hole to finish one shot ahead of a four-man group which included Thomas Bjorn and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano. The victory is Jaidee's fifth European Tour success, but his first to actually come in Europe after his previous victories all came in co-sanctioned events in Asia. The former paratrooper was understandably delighted to have broken his duck and could hardly contain his joy after a tricky week in Newport. "I want to say thank-you to all my family, all the supporters and the sponsors here," he said. "Conditions were quite tough for me. "I tried to hit everything on the fairway - that's the main thing - then hit the ball on the green. It was very, very tough for me, not like Thailand!"
